About this product

These marvellous Catrina ceramic statues are rarely seen outside of Mexico and each one is a wonderfully elaborate piece of art. This particular Catrina wears a wonderfully patterned dress adorned with colourful stripes and zigzags. She carries a handbag and the attention to detail around the fingers, skull and chest are stunning. Made with the upmost of care and attention to detail in a small family workshop on the outskirts of Texcoco, the figures show the famous Catrina skeleton. Originally made by artist Jose Posada, 'La Calavera Catrina' has become a very popular image in Mexico and is closely associated with the Day of The Dead festival. Diego Rivera has also had a lasting influence on the popularity of the image after he included her in many of his vast murals. This is a very rare opportunity to buy a truly exceptional item of Mexican folk art.

Artesanías Díaz

Meet the Maker: Artesanías Díaz

Based in Texcoco, Mexico

Artesanías Díaz is a family-run workshop led by two brothers Arturo and Gilberto, where they create stunning Calavera Catrinas alongside both traditional and more contemporary ceramic pieces. Visiting them at their home was a real privilege – we shared food, a little tequila, and came away with the beginnings of a great collection of crucifixes, incense holders and Aztec masks and plaques.
