Special Item. Only 1 available.
About this product

This fearsome mask depicts Bhairab, a wrathful manifestation of Shiva known for his protective power. The carving features a fierce expression, bulging eyes and a crown of skulls, all hand painted in striking colours. A hook on the back allows for easy hanging.

In Hindu and Newar traditions, Bhairab symbolises the destruction of ignorance and the protection of sacred spaces. The name comes from the Sanskrit root bhiru meaning fearsome, referring to Bhairab’s ability to overcome fear. Masks of Bhairab are used in festivals such as Indra Jatra to ward off evil and remind spectators of impermanence.

Carved by hand in Nepalese workshops, each mask is unique. Artisans use locally sourced wood or wood with metal plating for certain versions, then paint and finish them with care. Our Fair Trade partnerships ensure craftspeople receive fair pay, preserving these important cultural practices.
