Small Birthing Figure Idol

This small figurine is based on the ancient Aztec sculpture known as the Dumbarton Oaks Birthing Figure. Depicting the agony and ecstasy of childbirth, this striking sculpture is very unusual and is markedly distinct from other ancient Aztec carvings. The figure has captured the imaginations of several artists with Man Ray, Diego Rivera and Eduardo Paolozzi all incorporating its likeness into their work. Perhaps the most famous depiction of the figure is in the film Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark where it appears as a golden idol.
