Mexican Axolotl Figurine
About this product
This ceramic figurine depicts the axolotl — the remarkable aquatic salamander native to the lake complex of Xochimilco near Mexico City. The name derives from the Nahuatl words "atl" (water) and "xolotl" (the Aztec god associated with lightning, fire and the underworld), literally meaning "water monster." In Aztec mythology, Xolotl transformed himself into an axolotl to avoid sacrifice during the creation of the sun and moon, and was subsequently condemned to live in the water forever. The axolotl became a symbol of transformation and resilience — qualities reflected in its extraordinary real-world ability to regenerate lost limbs.
This style of ceramic is known as barro pottery. Our pieces are hand crafted by a husband and wife team who work from their home workshop in Texcoco, Mexico. By choosing this figurine, you're not only adding a traditional piece of art to your collection but also supporting local craftsmanship.
