This large, bold and beautifully carved wooden mask has been hand made and painted by Newari artisans in Nepal. Hinduism and Buddhism incorporate traditional dances and masks play an important role in traditional Tibetan culture and life. This amazing piece depicts Bhairab (also known as Bhairava or Mahakala, ) a fierce aspect of the Hindu god Shiva. These effigies are often hung above doors and entranceways and are said to be protective of a house or temple. Depicted with a crown of five skulls symbolising the transmutation of negative afflictions (greed, aggression, ignorance, pride and jealousy) into the five wisdoms. This kind of mask features frowning, angry eyes, sharp tiger teeth and sometimes flaming hair or, in this example, coiled serpents; he is associated with annihilation and is sacred to Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.
