About this product

This charming elephant has been hand carved from Kenyan soapstone, its distinctive square-set ears giving it a bold, sculptural character that sets it apart from more rounded forms. A wonderful paperweight or a striking ornament for a shelf or sideboard, it brings a touch of artisan warmth to any space.

Most of the world's soapstone originates from Kisii in the western highlands of Kenya — home to the finest soapstone carvers, whose craft has been passed down through generations. The talc-rich composition of soapstone gives it a uniquely smooth, silky feel — soft to the touch and a pleasure to handle. Before carving begins, the stone is immersed in water to soften it further, allowing the artisan to work with precision. A hammer and chisel define the main form, colour is applied by hand, and a small knife known as a Kisu is used to engrave the fine surface detail.

Lovingly handmade in Kenya, this Fair Trade ornament honours ethical craft traditions and supports local communities. By choosing this piece, you bring home more than just an ornament — you invite the quiet craftsmanship and cultural heritage of Kisii artisans into your space.
