Manastir Rug and Throw

A genuine vintage textile with history woven into it — this Manastir carpet is a traditional Turkish flatweave throw dating from the 1950s or earlier, originating from the Thrace or European region of Turkey. The deep crimson ground is worked with geometric and floral motifs in warm but muted tones, with a fringed border that is characteristic of the style. Versatile enough to use as a bed throw, sofa cover, or floor rug, it brings an authentic boho warmth to any interior.

Manastir carpets take their name from the town of Monastir (now Bitola, in present-day North Macedonia), a significant weaving centre whose influence extended across the broader Thrace region during the Ottoman period. The flatweave construction — typically woven on a horizontal loom using wool — produces a textile that is both durable and supple, with a weight and drape quite different from pile rugs. The geometric and stylised floral motifs are drawn from Ottoman weaving traditions, with each region developing its own colour palette and pattern conventions over generations.
