A Family Craft, Rooted in Bali

Our line of bamboo root ducks are all crafted by a wonderful family business based in central Bali. Two brothers and one sister work together to craft their vast collection of natural and painted characters.

We make sure to visit them on each of our buying trips and have established a strong relationship over the years we have been working with them. Their beautiful workshop is surrounded by luscious greenery...making a visit even more enjoyable!

Sustainability at the Core

All of the ducks are hand carved from fast-growing bamboo sourced from nearby Java, another Indonesian island. This makes the whole enterprise highly sustainable and eco-friendly, which is at the core of Siestas values. 

The bamboo is sourced locally and it is the fastest growing grass in the world. That's right - some species can grow between 30cm and 90cm PER DAY!

Community

It is an all-round community set up, with the family employing many locals to form the full team. Each shape of duck is carved over and over - ducklings, full ducks, ducks with boots - so they have stock for all manner of designs. They have quite literally an army of ducks!

Once the carving is complete, the ducks are painting into their final outfits using acrylic paints. After that they are ready for their wig and hat fittings!

Working Together on Custom Designs

Many of the ducks are Siesta's own character ideas, being designed in-house and discussed closely with the family to make any necessary tweaks. It's always exciting to see the first round of real-life samples and how our characters have (almost) come to life!
