Fired with Spirit

These colourful Mexican ceramics have been made with the upmost of care in a small family workshop on the outskirts of Texcoco. The attention to detail is astounding. Each element is moulded and hand painted before being attached to the main design by wire to create a vibrant statue.

Originally made by artist Jose Posada, 'La Calavera Catrina' has become a very popular image in Mexico and is closely associated with the Day of The Dead festival. Here, her form is reincarnated as a collection of colourful ceramic figures, each one shaped by hand and rich with detail.
